Faith gaining righteousness
『Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.』(Romans 6: 6)
It leads to three sentences. “old man is crucified”“the body of sin might be destroyed”“we should not serve sin”
These sentences are progressive. What Luther realized is that this is not done by works but by faith. So faith bears fruit as a result. This faith is not a faith decided to believe in Jesus, but a faith crucified with Jesus.
『I am crucified with Christ: neverthless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.』(Galatians 2:20)
Believing depends on what you believe. “I believe in Jesus” is not a faith that unites with me and Christ, but a belief that Jesus died for me to receive forgiveness.
The body of sin in me must die. The body of sin is the old man (sinity). But to die with Christ is to die of the body of sin. For he that is dead is freed from sin. (Romans 6: 7)
Many people believe in Jesus as follows: their inner attributes remain the same previous, but the faith to be forgiven the sin. The new covenant is a bilateral covenant. God and sinners die together on the cross.
When God gives light, sinners can realize the meaning of these words. Those in darkness eventually become slaves to sin.
