Seven, and a few little fishes
Matthew 15:32-38
『Then Jesus called his disciples unto him, and said, I have compassion on the multitude, because they continue with me now three days, and have nothing to eat: and I will not send them away fasting, lest they faint in the way. And his disciples say unto him, Whence should we have so much bread in the wilderness, as to fill so great a multitude? And Jesus saith unto them, How many loaves have ye? And they said, Seven, and a few little fishes. And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the ground. And he took the seven loaves and the fishes, and gave thanks, and brake them, and gave to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude. And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the broken meat that was left seven baskets full. And they that did eat were four thousand men, beside women and children. 』
There is a word in the Bible about five loaves and two fish. The five loaves are called Altos in Greek, and Nehem in Hebrew. There is a gold statue in front of the ark of God, on which shewbrea is placed. shewbrea symbolizes the word of God. Exodus 25:30 says, "And thou shalt set upon the table shewbread before me alway."There are 12 shewbrea on the table, which is also a symbol of Israel. Jesus said in John 6:48, "I am that bread of life. 』 This bread is the same word as the bread that comes from the miracle of the five breads. The five loaves, or five words, signify the Pentateuch. That is, the law. The five loaves a child had means the Pentateuch of Moses (law).
The fish is called Ixtus in Greek, and includes the words “Jesus Christ is my salvation”. The fish represent Jonah's target. Jonah's sign represents Jesus Christ's resurrection three days after his death. The saying that there are two fish means the first and second coming of Jesus. Twelve baskets left after eating five loaves were left, and "twelve baskets left" means that Israel (12 tribes) heard the word but did not know the truth. It means that Israel must eat the bread remaining in the basket when Jesus comes again after ascension. When God restores Israel, Israel realizes and eats bread. Those who ate first represent the Gentiles.
These words have to do with the words of the end. We can know the end when we understand what Jesus intends to say about Israel. In Matthew 8:9-12 there is a story of healing the servant of the centurion in Rome, which Jesus is talking about Israel.『For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me: and I say to this man, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it. When Jesus heard it, he marvelled, and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel. And I say unto you, That many shall come from the east and west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven. But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. 』 It means that Israel will be driven out. It means that the Gentiles will be saved first, and Israel will be saved later. These words are in line with the words of Matthew 19:27-30.『Then answered Peter and said unto him, Behold, we have forsaken all, and followed thee; what shall we have therefore? And Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That ye which have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. And every one that hath forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name's sake, shall receive an hundredfold, and shall inherit everlasting life. But many that are first shall be last; and the last shall be first. 』
In particular in verse 30, “But many that are first shall be last; and the last shall be first. ' This is the word Jesus answers when Jesus spoke with the rich young man, when his disciples asked, "Who will go to heaven?" It is said that the first one is Israel, and the latter one is Gentiles. And Jesus is speaking of Israel in the parable of the vineyard. This is about the Israelites killing all the prophets and even the Son of God. That is, Israel fails, and the Gentiles take over the vineyard. And Jesus explains the kingdom of heaven by analogy with the king as a wedding feast for his son.
It is a story of chasing a person who does not wear a robe. Those who do not wear robes are Israel. There is also a metaphor for talent. A servant who buries money in the ground means useless Israel. Whenever Jesus speaks of Israel, he is speaking in parables. It is a saying that Israel fails and falls, and the gospel is first preached to the Gentiles. What Jesus says through five loaves and two fish is telling us that Christ came to this world, and Israel is still waiting for Christ in the law.
Here, the words of seven loaves and a few little fishes are a miracle Jesus performed in a Gentile region called Decabolly, not in Judea. In the seven loaves, seven represents rest, and the loaves represent the word in which the promise was fulfilled. A few little fishes means little fish, not two. The fish represent Jonah's target. Jonah's sign signifies that Jesus Christ was resurrected three days after his death.
Here, the little fish is Jesus' disciples left in the world after Jesus' resurrection and ascension, and it means the little Jesus who preaches the gospel to the end of the world. The little Jesus is those who believe that he died and rose with him. So, he is the one who imparts heavenly life to people. After eating four thousand people, seven baskets remained.
In the miracle of five loaves and two fish, it is a small basket. Small baskets can hold small items, but big baskets are large and material is also important. The big basket was made by weaving reeds. The reed is reminiscent of the reed object containing the baby Moses. But here the reed symbolizes Egypt. In Ezekiel 29:6, ``And all the inhabitants of Egypt shall know that I am the LORD, because they have been a staff of reed to the house of Israel. 』Egypt means a reed staff that afflicts Israel. The same expression is used in 2 Kings 18:21. In other words, a basket made of reeds symbolizes the world.
『They took up of the broken meat that was left seven baskets full. And they that did eat were four thousand men, beside women and children. 』It is telling us that the Gospel will be preached and blessed to the Gentiles until the end of the world. The source of blessing is the blessing that God spoke to Abraham. In Genesis 13:1-3, "And Abram went up out of Egypt, he, and his wife, and all that he had, and Lot with him, into the south. And Abram was very rich in cattle, in silver, and in gold. And he went on his journeys from the south even to Bethel, unto the place where his tent had been at the beginning, between Bethel and Hai』
In Matthew 12:17-21, "That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Behold my servant, whom I have chosen; my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased: I will put my spirit upon him, and he shall shew judgment to the Gentiles. He shall not strive, nor cry; neither shall any man hear his voice in the streets. A bruised reed shall he not break, and smoking flax shall he not quench, till he send forth judgment unto victory. And in his name shall the Gentiles trust. 』
