Revelation
3:1『And unto the angel of the church in Sardis write; These
things saith he that hath the seven Spirits of God, and the seven stars; I know
thy works, that thou hast a name that thou livest, and art dead.
』
The one who has the seven
spirits and the seven stars said to the Sardis church, “You have a name that says you are alive, but you are dead.” It is Jesus who has the seven spirits and the seven stars. There
were seven churches in Asia Minor when the Apostle John wrote the book of
Revelation, and these were the churches that actually existed. These seven
churches symbolize all the churches today. It is said, “There are churches like the Church of Sardis even today.” Jesus said, "I know your deeds, that you have a name that you
are alive, but you are dead."
“It seems alive,
but it is dead”. Because it is the act in 『I know your deeds』. Usually, when people in
the church think of this act, they think it has to do with the believers' life
of faith. In John 6, there is a miracle of two fish and five loaves of bread.
Many people saw the miracle and appeared to Jesus to meet him. Jesus said to
the crowd, “The reason you sought me is because you saw
a sign. No, because he ate and was full.” He said, “Do not work for food that perishes, but for food that endures to
eternal life.” Then the Jews asked, “How should we do God’s work?”
Jesus said, “It is the work of God to believe in him whom God has sent.” Here, the “work” of
working for food that endures to eternal life is believing in the one sent by
God.
The work of God is to “believe in the one whom God has sent,” and
the act of rebuking the church in Sardis in the book of Revelation is that
Jesus says, “I know how you believe” about believing in the one God has sent.
“They don’t really believe it.” Everyone who sees and
believes in the Son of God has eternal life. Since He says “the dead”, it means “I do not believe in the Son”. In other
words, it means “believing wrongly”. “Believing in the Son of God is because
you didn’t believe exactly and with certainty”. It means 'be there'. It means, “Be clear
and certain about the gospel.” It means, “You must not be lukewarm about the things of God.”
God said, “I have not found
anything perfect about your deeds,” but your deeds are
believing in the Son of God, which means “You are not
perfect.” In other words, “I
think God’s promise has not been fulfilled”.
So,
keep what you have received and what you have heard, and repent. At first, when
the apostles preached the gospel, they taught it properly, but they said, “I couldn’t keep it.”
The word “repent” does not mean
“repent” about the fact that
humans have made mistakes in their lives. It's a saying to people, "Trust
properly." That is, “Do not try to attain the
righteousness of God through the law, but attain the righteousness of God
through faith in Jesus Christ.”
For what the law
could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in
the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: That the
righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the
flesh, but after the Spirit.(Romans 8:3-4)
