Question 53. How was Christ exalted in his ascension?
Question 53. How
was Christ exalted in his ascension?
Answer. Christ's
exaltation in his ascension means that after his resurrection he often appeared
to his apostles, talked with them, and spoke to them of the things pertaining
to the kingdom of God, and gave them the commission to preach the gospel to all
nations; and then forty days after his resurrection he ascended into the
highest heaven, in our nature, as our head, triumphing over his enemies, and in
the sight of men, where he received gifts for men, and made us long for it, and
prepared a place for us, where the Lord is, and will remain until his second
coming at the end of the world.
In John 14:2-3, it
says, “I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for
you, I will come again and receive you to myself; that where I am, there you
may be also.” Christ’s ascension is to prepare a place for the saints. When the angels
sinned, God took away their dwelling place and confined them in the flesh,
making them human beings. However, when they repented, took off their fleshly
bodies, put on spiritual bodies, and returned to the kingdom of God, they
returned to their original dwelling place. Where is the kingdom of God to which
they will return? Although humans cannot know spiritual things, they experience
the kingdom of God while their bodies are alive. This refers to the kingdom of
God in their spirit.
In 2 Corinthians 5:1-2, it
says, "For we know that if the earthly tent which is our home is
destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in
the heavens. For in this we groan, longing to be covered with our dwelling
which is from heaven."
In 1 Peter 3:22, “Who has ascended into
heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels and authorities and powers
being made subject to him.” Christ ascended and
returned to the right hand of God. The saints also ascended with Christ.
Ephesians 2:6, “And raised us up with him, and made us sit with him in the heavenly
places in Christ Jesus.” And since Christ has
come again into the hearts of the saints, the saints have also entered their
hearts as spirits. That is why the saints establish the kingdom of God.
The second coming of Jesus
Christ is for the saints to enter the temple established in the hearts of the
saints and establish the kingdom of God. Therefore, the second coming has
occurred, but for those who have not established the kingdom of God, there will
be judgment at the end of time through the second coming of Jesus.
