Question 56. How will Christ be exalted by His second coming to judge the world?

Answer. The exaltation of Christ in His second coming to judge the world will be manifested in the fact that He, who has been unjustly judged and condemned by the wicked, will come again on the last day with great power and with the full display of His glory and His Father's glory, with all His holy angels, with a loud cry, with the shout of the archangel, and with the trumpet of God, to judge the world in righteousness.

Judgment appears in two forms. God's judgment on the saints is the second death through their union with the cross of Jesus Christ. Therefore, the saints are also judged on the cross with Jesus.

God has given all judgment authority to Jesus Christ. John 5:26-27 For just as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son to have life in himself. And he has given him authority to judge, because he is the Son of Man. Therefore, Gods judgment will come upon those who do not come into Christ.

The Bible says that those who have been judged in advance by uniting with Jesus on the cross will go on to the resurrection of life. However, those who have not will go on to the resurrection of judgment. John 5:29, "Those who have done good will come on to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil will come on to the resurrection of judgment." The resurrection of judgment means that when the spirits of the wicked take off their flesh, they will be put on a body that will be judged. Unlike the resurrection of life, which is a spiritual body from heaven, they will undergo the resurrection of judgment, which is a spiritual body from Hades. This is the judgment of fire.

Matthew 3:11-12 I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to remove. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his threshing floor, gathering his wheat into the barn and burning the chaff with unquenchable fire.

The baptism that John the Baptist gave was a baptism of water, a baptism of repentance for sins. Going into the water symbolizes repentance and forgiveness of sins. However, the baptism that Jesus gave was a baptism of the Holy Spirit and fire. The baptism of fire symbolizes death on the cross, and the baptism of the Holy Spirit symbolizes resurrection. Those who died in union with Jesus on the cross were judged by receiving the baptism of fire (second death), and are reborn in union with the resurrected Jesus by the Holy Spirit. This applies to those who enter into Christ.

The judgment of fire mentioned in Matthew 3:12 is the judgment of Hades for those who do not acknowledge Christ as Lord. It includes those who do not believe in Jesus and those who say they believe in Jesus but are caught up in legalism, humanism, and gnosticism. Those who mix the gospel and the law are guilty of blasphemy against the Holy Spirit.
