Question 87. What
are we to believe concerning the resurrection?
Answer. There will
be a general resurrection of the dead at the last day, of the just and the
wicked. Those who are then alive will be changed in an instant, and the dead in
the graves, their very bodies united to their souls forever, will be raised
again by the power of Christ. The bodies of the just will be raised by the
Spirit of Christ, or by the efficacy of the resurrection of Christ as their
Head, spiritual and incorruptible, like unto his glorious body. The bodies of
the wicked will also be raised again in shame by the Lord, the wrathful Judge.
John 5:26-29 “For just as the
Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son to have life in himself.
And he has given him authority to execute judgment because he is the Son of
Man. Do not marvel at this, for an hour is coming in which all who are in the
graves will hear his voice and come out—those who have done good, to the resurrection of
life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of judgment.”
The tomb does not
refer to a grave where the body is dead, but to the physical body where the
spirit is dead. From the perspective of the spirit, it is like a prison. Jesus
went to the spirits in prison before he died on the cross and was resurrected.
In 1 Peter 3:18-19, it says, "For Christ also suffered once for all for
sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to
death in the flesh but made alive in the Spirit, in which spirit he went and
preached to the spirits in prison."
The jade symbolizes
the body of flesh, and to proclaim is to knock on the door of the hearts of the
people of the world. The people of the world symbolize sinners, and it is a
metaphor for the people that Noah cried out for 120 years. Noah cried out for
120 years, but no one turned back except for seven members of his family. Jesus
also knocked on the door of people's hearts with his spirit, but it did not
open. The spirits sleeping in the grave hear the voice of Jesus, but only a very
small number hear his voice, receive resurrection life, and their spirits rise.
Those who do good
deeds are united with Jesus Christ. The saints who are united with Jesus
advance to the resurrection of life. However, those who hear the voice of Jesus
Christ and turn away are those who do evil deeds. They advance to the
resurrection of judgment. Those who advance to the resurrection of life receive
resurrection life while their bodies are alive and establish the kingdom of
God. However, those who advance to the resurrection of judgment continue to
live in prison while their bodies are alive in spirit, and when their bodies
die one day, their spirits will be clothed in judgment and receive judgment by
fire in Hades.
Those who have received resurrection life have already been judged (the
second death) on the cross with Jesus Christ. However, those who do not enter
into Christ will receive the judgment of the second death when their body dies.
