Question 90. What will happen to the righteous on the day of judgment?

Answer. On the day of judgment the righteous will be caught up to Christ in the clouds, and will stand at his right hand, and will be publicly acknowledged and acquitted, and will judge the reprobate angels and men with Christ, and will be received into heaven, where they will be freed from all sin and misery for ever and ever, and filled with inconceivable joy; so that they will be made perfectly holy and happy in body and soul, and will especially enjoy the presence and joy of God the Father, our Lord Jesus Christ the Son, and the Holy Spirit, in the company of the innumerable hosts of saints and holy angels, to all eternity. This is the perfect and full communion which the members of the invisible church shall enjoy with Christ in glory at the resurrection and day of judgment.

In the catechism, it is said that believers who are caught up to Christ in the clouds on the day of judgment are publicly declared innocent and freed from sin and misery. However, Romans 6:6-7 says, "Knowing this, that our old self was crucified with him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin. For he who has died has been freed from sin and has been justified."

Ephesians 1:15 says, "Even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christby grace you have been savedand raised us up with him, and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus."

Therefore, God's judgment on sinners is Jesus Christ who died on the cross, and this is the atonement. Those who are united with his death are also judged. Therefore, God gives spiritual life to those who died with Jesus on the cross. The Bible expresses this in various ways.

Because of the expression caught up in the clouds, the word rapture appeared among believers, and many believers believe that there will be tribulation before the judgment and that the saints will be raptured before the tribulation. The expression caught up in the clouds refers to the spiritually dead receiving resurrection life and being seated in heaven. The Bible does not say that this will happen at the judgment in the future, but that it is happening now. It says that this will happen when you believe that you died with Jesus (judgment) and were resurrected with Jesus.
