Question 83: What are the keys of the kingdom of heaven?
Question 83:
What are the keys of the kingdom of heaven?
Answer: The
preaching of the holy gospel and Christian discipline for repentance. That is,
through these two things, the gates of heaven are opened to believers and
closed to unbelievers.
Matthew 16:19 "I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven;
whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on
earth will be loosed in heaven."
The keys to the kingdom of heaven are those who open and close the
gates to enter heaven. God entrusted them to Jesus Christ, and Jesus Christ, in
turn, entrusted them to his apostles. Jesus gives the keys to the kingdom of
heaven to those who are entrusted with the treasury of heaven.
Matthew 13:52 Jesus said to them, “Therefore every scribe who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven
is like a householder who brings out of his treasure things new and old.”
Jesus entrusted
the keys to the kingdom of heaven to his apostles, and even today, a temple is
established in the hearts of believers, and Jesus entrusts it to those who
converse with ho logos. Those who preach the gospel with unbiblical doctrines
cannot be said to be entrusted with the kingdom of heaven's granary. Jesus'
disciples sought to bear the fruit of the gospel on earth in order to bring people
into the kingdom of heaven, but the Pharisees refused to enter the kingdom of
heaven themselves and prevented others from doing so. This was because they
were mired in legalism.
Those who preach
the false gospel today that salvation is achieved simply by believing are also
not entering the gates of heaven themselves, and are not allowing believers to
enter either.
When we repent and accept the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ on
the cross, and believe that we too are united with Jesus Christ, the fruit of
the gospel is borne.
