Question 191. What do we pray for in the second petition?
Question 191. What
do we pray for in the second petition?
Answer. In the
second petition, Thy kingdom come, acknowledging that we and all mankind are by
nature under the dominion of sin and Satan, we pray that the kingdom of sin and
Satan may be destroyed, that the gospel may be spread throughout the world,
that the Jews may be called, and that the full number of the Gentiles may come
in. We pray that the church may be equipped with all the ministers of the word
and ordinances, purified from corruption, praised and supported by worldly
rulers, and that the ordinances of Christ may be purely enforced. We pray that
those who are still in sin may be repented, that those who have already
repented may be corrected and comforted, that faith may grow, and that Christ
may reign in our hearts in this world and come again so that we may reign with
Him. We also pray that God may establish the kingdom of power and work
according to His good pleasure throughout the world to accomplish this purpose.
Kingdom is the Basileia, the
ruling power of the Kingdom of God. The saints become the Kingdom of God ruled
by God.
The meaning
of "Your kingdom come" is "Your kingdom come," and it is
asking for the kingdom of God to come. What kind of place is the kingdom of
God? It means the place where God's complete rule is realized. Rule is realized
in the Holy Spirit. The concept of the kingdom of God is not a concept of
location, but a concept of the work of the Holy Spirit. When the Holy Spirit
comes 100%, the kingdom of God has come, and God's complete rule is realized.
As Jesus
said in John 17, it is to become one as the Father and I are one. The meaning
of “your kingdom come” can mean “come to this world” or “be done in me.” The reason we ask for the kingdom
of God to come is because this is not the kingdom of God. It is because sinners
have left God. The Bible tells us that humans have left God and to realize
this. Because sinners have left God, it is asking for the kingdom of God to
come.
The primary
meaning of “let
the kingdom of God come”
is that the kingdom of the Messiah will come to this world. It refers to the
millennial kingdom of the Book of Revelation, where Jesus Christ will return,
restore Israel, and rule over it. The millennial kingdom is the kingdom of God
established in the hearts of the saints.
In Luke
17:20-21, “The
Pharisees asked him when the kingdom of God would come. Jesus answered them, ‘The kingdom of God cannot be seen.
No one will say, ‘See
here!’
or ‘See there!’ For, behold, the kingdom of God is
within you.’”
The kingdom
of God that the Pharisees speak of is a question with the Messianic kingdom in
mind, but Jesus speaks of the “kingdom
of God within you.”
When the kingdom of God is realized within me, I will realize the complete
reign of God. I will become one with God.
In John
17:11-15, Jesus says, “Let
us become one.”
This word refers to the complete reign of God in the Holy Spirit. In other
words, it refers to the complete communion with God in the Holy Spirit.
In Genesis
2:23-24, “And
Adam said, This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be
called ‘woman,’ because she was taken out of man.” Therefore a man shall leave his
father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh,” has a profound meaning.
It means,
"Because they were originally one, they must become one again." In
Ephesians 5:30-32, "For we are members of his body. For this reason a man
will leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two will
become one flesh. This is a profound mystery, and I am speaking about Christ
and the church."
What is the
great secret that the Apostle Paul spoke of? It is not something that can be
easily understood. This secret is about Christ and the church. The unity of
Christ and the church means that they are originally one.
In Genesis
2:25, it says, “Adam
and Eve were naked, and they were not ashamed.” The word “naked” means they are naked with respect
to the kingdom of God. Jesus called the Pharisees blind, which means they are
blind with respect to the kingdom of God. The fact that Adam and Eve were “naked” does not mean they were “physically naked,” but “spiritually naked.”
