Question 106: Does this commandment refer only to murder?
Answer: By prohibiting murder, God teaches us that He hates the very roots of murder: envy, hatred, anger, and resentment. In God's eyes, all of these constitute murder.
The Law is God's gospel, given to us to discover Christ. However, if believers fall into legalism, they become like those burdened by the letter of the law. The Israelites were like that, and they even crucified the Messiah. Legalism is murder. The Pharisees, scribes, and legalists murdered Jesus with the law given by God.
Even within the church today, this legalism is rampant. Believers daily examine the Ten Commandments, examining whether or not they are sinning, and strive to avoid it. If they do sin, they seek forgiveness through the blood of Jesus. This, too, is like crucifying Jesus twice.
Jesus atoned for all sins once and for all. Blood could no longer be shed. Hebrews 9:28, "So Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who eagerly await him."
