Question 16-18

Question 16: Let us recite this Apostles' Creed.

Answer: I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; He descended into hell; on the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, He sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from whence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

Question 17: To explain this confession of faith in detail, how can it be divided into several parts?

Answer: Four parts.

You said four, but it's actually three.

Question 18: What are they?

Answer: First, concerning God the Father.

Second, concerning Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

Third, concerning the Holy Spirit.

Fourth, concerning the Church and all God's gracious acts toward the Church.

It concerns three things:

First, faith manifested in God.

Second, faith manifested in Christ.

Third, faith arising from the Holy Spirit. "I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting." This part is related to the Holy Spirit. Let's examine the parts related to the Holy Spirit separately:

The thirteenth part of the Apostles' CreedCredo in Spiritum Sanctum,

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

I believe in the Holy Spirit. The Latin and English Bibles say, "I believe in the Holy Spirit." This doesn't simply mean believing in the Holy Spirit, but believing in something in the Holy Spirit. It means believing in both the fourteenth and seventeenth verses in the Holy Spirit. This means believing in the holy Church, the community of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection, and eternal life.

Fourteenth part

sanctam Ecclesiam catholicam,

the holy Catholic Church,

Holy Catholic Church,

Unlike the Latin, the English Apostles' Creed uses the holy universal church, meaning "holy church" (holy church), meaning "saints." Saints become the holy church through the Holy Spirit.

Fifteenth part

sanctorum communionem,

the communion of saints

Community of Saints

Unlike its Latin counterpart, the English Apostles' Creed speaks of the fellowship of saints or the communion of saints.

The community of saints, as seen in Latin, refers to the church community where saints gather today. The church community is a community of saints who are baptized in the Holy Spirit. Only saints who have been baptized in the Holy Spirit form the church community. It does not refer to the believers gathered in churches today.

Sixteenth part

remissionem peccatorum,

the forgiveness of sins,

Forgiveness of sins, this part also means that it is accomplished through the Holy Spirit.

Seventeenth part

carnis resurrectionem et vitam aeternam.

the resurrection of the flesh and eternal life.

The resurrection of the body and eternal life. The Apostles' Creed in the English Bible is translated as "the resurrection of the body." The resurrection of the flesh in Latin is the English "the resurrection of the flesh." "Fresh" refers not to the physical body received from parents, but to the spiritual body, which is like the clothing worn by the spirit. 1 Corinthians 15:44 states, "It is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is also a spiritual body."
