The circumcision
『This is my covenant,
which ye shall keep, between me and you and thy seed after thee; Every man child among you
shall be circumcised. And ye shall circumcise
the flesh of your foreskin; and it shall be a token of the covenant
betwixt me and you.』(Genesis 17:10-11), 『He that is born in thy house, and he that is bought with
thy money, must needs be circumcised: and my covenant
shall be in your flesh for an everlasting
covenant.』(Genesis 17:13). This was a testament of the people of
God in the Old Testament times.
Circumcision is a ceremony in which an old man dies
and becomes a covenant people of God, 『Awake, awake; put on thy strength, O Zion; put on thy
beautiful garments, O Jerusalem, the holy city: for henceforth there shall no
more come into thee the uncircumcised and the unclean. 』 (Isaiah 52:1)
God also calls to the Israelites must to be
circumcised in the mind. And the LORD thy God will circumcise thine heart, and
the heart of thy seed, to love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with
all thy soul, that thou mayest live. (Deuteronomy 30:6) Paul expresses
"circumcision of the mind" as "circumcision of Christ“. In whom also
ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the
body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ: (Colossae 2:11)
The meaning of this is to forsake themselves thoughts before the word of God.
This is the expression of the obedience to God and going into Christ. This is
expressed as baptism in the New Testament times.
Therefore we are buried with him by baptism
into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the
Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. (Romans 6:4)
