The parable of the ten virgins
Matthew 25:1-4『 Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom. And five of them were wise, and five were foolish. They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them: But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps. 』
It is very important to know to whom Jesus spoke the words of the text. Matthew 25 is what Jesus said in a connection while talking about what will happen in the last days of chapter 24. Although there are no chapters and verses in the original text of the Bible, chapters and verses were introduced in the 16th century to make reading easier. So, in terms of the original text, we must remember that chapters 24 and 25 are linked. In chapter 25, not only the parable of the ten virgins, but also the parable of the talent and the parable of the sheep and the goat appear. Thus, in Jesus' parable of the ten virgins, it means that the object is the same as the object in the parable of the talent or the sheep and the goat.
As in Mana's parable, the number ten (10) means "completion, fullness." Ten virgins means all virgins. In 2 Corinthians 11:2, ``For I am jealous over you with godly jealousy: for I have espoused you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ.'' So, virgins mean church members who are waiting for Jesus Christ as the bridegroom. However, in order to become the bride of Jesus, you must drink the wine that Jesus Christ gives to the brides. It also appears in the Israeli marriage tradition. The prospective groom visits the prospective bride's house, and he pours wine into a glass and gives it to the prospective bride. If she does not drink, marriage will not be established. The wine Jesus gives corresponds to the blood shed on the cross. In other words, those who drink wine mean those who died in association with Jesus, who died on the cross. The ten virgins all think of Jesus as "Lord," but there are only five wise virgins who drank wine.
The five wise virgins are wise in Matthew 7:25. "And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock"
It means that the ten wise virgins are like those who built a house on the rock. The rock is Jesus Christ. "And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand" in 7:26
Those who are stupid are those who heard the word of Jesus and did not follow the word. Jesus died the ransom death on behalf of all humans, and they do not believe that word. Today, there are many church members who believe in Jesus, but do not fully believe what Jesus has accomplished. Jesus fulfilled all human sins through the ransom death, but still believes that believers must do something themselves.
"Saints whose old man died" avoids sin. In Romans 6:6, 『Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin』 Those who died with Jesus Christ have life from God. In 1 John 5:18, "We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not』. So, people who say they believe in Jesus, but think that they must confess their sins and receive forgiveness every day. They will not be the "old man" dead.
We must understand well about the lamps the ten virgins have. The light from the lamp is the light from Jesus Christ. In Matthew 5:14, ``Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. And in Matthew 5:16, 『Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. 』
Good deeds are not good deeds by doing something in the world, but awakening of the dead spirit is good deeds in the sight of God. God is glorified when "a sinner repents and turns to God."
In John 5:35, "He was a burning and a shining light: and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light".
In other words, it means that John receives the light and shines it. In Ephesians 5:8, 『For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light: 』
Because Jesus gave life to the saints and the saints received life, the light of life shines. If you cannot shine, you cannot say that you have received the light. All ten virgins had lanterns. However, the five wise virgins have different oil drums. That is, it is the oil of the Spirit of life. So they could light up. However, the five foolish virgins received the light of God through the word of the law, but did not receive the Holy Spirit, so they eventually returned to darkness.
In Matthew 25:4, "But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps. 』
Vessels are sometimes expressed when talking about being a person. In 2 Corinthians 4:6-7, 『For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us. 』
Here, "Let the light shine in the dark" is a quote from Genesis 1:3. "We have this treasure in earthen vessels" The treasure is Christ. Earthenware means humans made of soil. The fact that the treasure was put in an earthen vessel means that Jesus Christ entered the saints. "the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps". The Holy Spirit is in the saints.
Oil means olive oil. In the Old Testament, olive oil was used to anoint kings, priests, and prophets. In Luke 4:18, the Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, 』
It expresses the presence of the Holy Spirit as "anointing." And in 1 John 2:20, 『But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things. 』In 2:27, 『But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie , and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him. 』
When a saint is anointed, it means that the Holy Spirit has entered.
In the end, the five wise virgins can be said to be people who fully believe the Word of God by receiving the Holy Spirit. The five wise virgins become light in Christ and become those who can impart the life of light to others. The five foolish virgins are those who hear the word of God, but judge it with their fleshly heart, do not completely believe the word of God, but accept it selectively. They say they believe in Jesus Christ and go to church eagerly, but they think they must do something. Although in Romans 8:1, "There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.", the five foolish virgins do not believe this.
That is why they believe that they must confess their sins every day and be forgiven with the blood of Jesus. These people correspond to the five stupid virgins, without the old man dead, without the Holy Spirit.
