Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof
Having a form of godliness, but denying the
power thereof
(2 Timothy 3:1-7)This know also, that in the last days perilous
times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves,
covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful,
unholy, Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false
accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,Traitors,
heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;Having a form of
godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away. For of this sort
are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins,
led away with divers lusts, Ever learning, and never able to come to the
knowledge of the truth.
Paul described in
detail how people will live their lives in the last days. For men shall be
lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient
to parents, unthankful, unholy, Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false
accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, Traitors,
heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;Having a form of
godliness, but denying the power thereof.
As many as 19
specific human figures were listed. The last days Paul speaks of are not a
concept of a certain time, but can be thought of as representing the sinfulness
of man. Today, people love money, love themselves, and homosexuality is
rampant, so Jesus compared the days of Noah and Lot and spoke of the last days.
“from
such turn away,” says Paul. The
"turn away method" is to live by faith, realizing that only with
Jesus, the physical body dies and the spiritual body is reborn. To be dead to
the world. To live a godly life in Christ Jesus like this is to go directly
against the world of the last days. The world will persecute the saints, Paul
says, for trying to live godly in Christ Jesus. 『Yea,
and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.』
『And
that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make
thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All scripture
is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof,
for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
That the man of God
may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.”.Paul
reveals that it is not just his extraordinary disposition that equips him to do
all good works. It is because of the Bible that he was able to go against the
world and live a godly life despite persecution and countless fluctuations in
life. The God-breathed Bible is the power to perfect the Christian life and the
power to do good works.
Romans 9:8 “That is, They which
are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God: but the
children of the promise are counted for the seed.”The children of the
flesh follow the flesh. Romans 8:5 says, “For they that are
after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the
Spirit the things of the Spirit.” Children of God follow the Spirit. In Romans
8:14, “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.”
By the way, “works of the flesh” are as follows. In
Galatians 5:19-21, “Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which
are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry,
witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, stripe, seditions, heresies,
Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell
you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such
things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
Those who follow the
Spirit think about the things of the Spirit. What is the Spirit's work? The
work of the Spirit is to bear the fruit of the Spirit in this world. Galatians
5:22-23 says, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering,
gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no
law.” And to worship God. In Revelation 22:9, “Then saith he unto
me, See thou do it not: for I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren the
prophets, and of them which keep the sayings of this book: worship God.” John fell down and
worshiped the angel, and the angel said to him, Worship is only to God.
However, many people worship idols, and many church members also serve wealth
more than God.
In John 6:63, “It is the spirit that
quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they
are spirit, and they are life.
If you believe in
Jesus, the spirit does not come back to life, but you must die with Jesus to be
resurrected as the spirit of life. In Romans 6:4, “Therefore we are
buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from
the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of
life.” Worship is to confess that you are dead with Jesus in the flesh, and
raised by God in the spirit. This is impossible without the death of the Son of
God, Jesus Christ. Because Jesus died on the cross, we too can die with him.
Faith is a gift from God to those who repent. This is the truth.
