Feed my sheep
Feed my sheep
John 21:15 『So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of
Jonas, lovest (Agapas) thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord;
thou knowest that I love (Philo) thee. He said unto him, Feed my lambs.』
Philo (phileo) is love between friends. Jesus asked with
agape (love for values), but Peter answered with phileo. They are out of focus.
However, Jesus tells us to feed the lambs. The lamb of Jesus means the sheep
that Jesus must take. In the eyes of Jesus, Peter still seemed to be without
agape love. So Jesus speaks again.
In chapter 21
verse 16, “He saith to him again the second time, Simon, son of
Jonas, lovest thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love
thee. He saith unto him, Feed my sheep.』
The same words are repeated here. Even in the second sentence, in Jesus' view,
Peter still did not have agape love. So Jesus speaks again.
In chapter 21
verse 17, “He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas,
lovest thou me? Peter was grieved (Elyupede) because he said unto him the third
time, Lovest (Phileo) thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all
things; thou knowest (Ginos case) that I love (Philo) thee. Jesus said unto
him, Feed my sheep.』
This time, Jesus
asked Peter a phileo question. “Do you consider me
your friend and love me?” Jesus asked.
Ginoscase (γινώσκειςGinosko) is
knowing through relationships. Agape refers to the resurrected Jesus'
"value as God (death and resurrection on the cross)." Only those who
realize its value can know that it works in the hearts of believers. However,
if most believers think of Jesus as Philo, they do not know its value.
Peter realized the
value of Jesus, but his heart was not ready to accept Him with agape. So, Jesus
goes down to Peter's eye level and corrects it with Phileo. However, when
Bedorus heard these words from Jesus, he became worried. The Greek word “elupedeh”
means to be saddened. The reason is that Peter should have told Jesus the third
time that he loved him with agape, but because he could not, Peter was sad
about his faith.
The saints must be
brought into the state of God and become one. Before the resurrection of Jesus,
God came down to the state of humans, but after the resurrection, the saints
must be brought up to the state of the resurrected Jesus. However, if a believer
still remains stuck in the death of the cross, it will be difficult. “The
fundamental purpose of Jesus’ agape”
is to revive the dead spirit. This is the death and resurrection of the cross.
If believers are not presently united with the death of the cross and not
presently united with the resurrection, they do not know the love of Agape and
cannot convey Agape love to others.
