Question 47. How did Christ humble himself in his conception and birth?

Answer. Christ humbled himself in his conception and birth; that is, although he was the Son of God the Father, yet when the fullness of time had come, he was conceived and born of a woman of lowly condition, and became the Son of Man, and in many ways he became lower than ordinary men.

Luke 2:12 And this will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger.

As prophesied in Micah 5, Jesus was born in Bethlehem, wrapped in swaddling clothes and laid in a manger. Jesus was born secretly and shabbily in a stable. His cradle was a manger, a feeding trough for animals. The baby Jesus in the manger was called a sign. A sign is something that shows what will happen in the future through a certain fact. It is the death on the cross.

Isaiah 53:2-3 For he grew up before him like a tender plant, and like a root out of dry ground. He had no form or comeliness; and when we saw him, there was no beauty that we should desire him. He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. And as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we hid not our esteem.
