Question 14: Can another creature then pay the penalty for our sins?

Answer: No. First of all, God does not wish to punish another creature for human sin. Moreover, no creature can bear God's eternal wrath against sin or redeem another creature.

In Colossians 1:15, it says, He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn (prototokos) of all creation. Prototokos (πρωτότοκος) means the one who appears first.

The doctrine does not speak of Jesus Christ as a created being, but while he was spiritually the Son of God, he was physically the son of Mary. This means he was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born as a human being.

In Christ's predestination, Christ is the beginning of all things. Therefore, Christ is the creator of all things and the firstborn of all creation. The first man is given a mortal, sinful body, while the last man is given a life-giving, spiritual body.

So, during the Exodus, God killed all firstborn. However, for the Israelites, he had them apply the blood of a lamb to their doorposts, thus preventing the angel of death from passing through. "Applying blood to the doorposts" signified that those inside the house also died in this way. Because they died, the angel passed through. The people then roasted and ate the lamb. This signified their union with death and their resurrection, becoming new beings. As new creations, they left Egypt and entered Canaan.

This is reminiscent of Noah's flood and the ark. Those who entered the ark died in the water. The ark was like a tomb. The pitch coated inside the ark symbolized the blood of Jesus Christ. Therefore, the water receded, and the eight who emerged from the ark were reborn creatures. They were given a new beginning.
