Question 36: With what kind of oil was He anointed?

Question 36: With what kind of oil was He anointed?

Answer: It was not a visible anointing, as was the case with the ancient kings, priests, and prophets. It was by the grace of the Holy Spirit. This grace of the Holy Spirit is the essence of the external anointing that took place in the past.

Acts 10:38 "How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, because God was with him."

The English word ecrisen (ἔχρισεν) is anoint, meaning to pour on. A precise translation would be, "God poured out the Holy Spirit and power on him." The word anointing appears in the Old Testament and was a ritual performed on prophets, kings, and priests. In other words, through the anointing ceremony, God designates him as someone. However, in the New Testament, the anointing ceremony is replaced by the Holy Spirit. Therefore, the anointing with the Holy Spirit is an awkward expression because it has a redundant meaning.

People often try to fit Jesus' roles into the Old Testament, linking him to prophet, king, and priest. However, Jesus was born as the Son of Man, but at his baptism, the Holy Spirit descended upon him, transforming him into the Son of God. Therefore, Jesus died on the cross as a sacrifice of atonement and was resurrected to save the sinners of the entire world.

Saints who are united with the death and resurrection of the cross are also born again by the Holy Spirit. Therefore, since God, His Son Jesus Christ, and the saints become one in the Holy Spirit, the saints, in Old Testament terms, become anointed ones.
